Learning Commons (LC)

The role of the library in learning is changing. Once a fixed location filled with books, the library is no longer a place of silence and rules. It is instead becoming a place of enquiry, conversation, experimentation and collaboration. A Learning Commons.

What is a Learning Commons?

Learning Commons are traditional libraries reimagined. Truly flexible spaces, they offer an adaptable environment where the layout can change to enable individual study, group discussions, social interaction and practical experimentation. Learning Commons incorporate technology and active participation to inspire curiosity, creativity and critical thinking across the community.

Our SIS Learning Commons spaces are at the heart of our school. Open and inclusive places for our entire community, they make a real impact on student learning and are integral to the social and cultural life of SIS.

The SIS Learning Commons offer multi-purpose spaces where students can find a quiet corner to read, reflect and study, where they can work together in lively conversation, and where they can meet and socialise. Through combining digital literacy with traditional learning approaches, classes can experiment and students can collaborate across year groups and with the wider school community.

Not just physical locations, our Learning Commons are a mindset that reaches across the school and beyond.  The approach is taken out into the classroom through makerspace learning and technology integration to encourage active learning and engagement for the diverse needs of our students.

We are continually investing in the SIS Learning Commons, adding innovative resources, technology and activities to inspire our students, their teachers and their families.
