Students at the Othello performance

Bound for life and education…

A group of Grade 9 and 10 mainstream English and EAL students made the trip to Stora Skuggan to enjoy a performance of Shakespeare’s Othello. Staged outdoors by the TNT Britain company in collaboration with ADSG Europe, the 130 students enjoyed seeing Shakespeare rise from the page in a live performance. This is the first such visit after the annual event was frustrated by the pandemic.

Othello is not a set text on their study programme, but they cover Shakespeare in 9th grade in the ‘Loving and Feuding’ unit, based on Romeo and JulietOthello is a fascinating play with complex characters, especially Iago, who brings the audience into his confidence and makes us complicit in the power he wields over Othello. Seeing the language of Shakespeare brought to life will be an experience that will help them navigate the rich complexity of Shakespeare’s poetry and prose.

As one of the students, Shangchen Xie remarked:

“I really enjoyed the play, the expression and tone of voice from the performers were so real and into the zone. My mood was also moving along with the story. Even though the set up was simple, the performers turned it into a big stage. Thank you again for this opportunity and hope to be able to see this next year when the company come back with Romeo and Juliet.
